Lightweight Aggregate Part of Mormon Temple Square’s Award-Winning Gardens
Mormon Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah was not always famous for its stunning grounds and gardens. Years ago, landscapers employed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were challenged by inconsistent topsoil that hindered plant growth. Determined to produce continuous blooms year round, the head gardener began experimenting with expanded shale and clay lightweight aggregate as a growing medium. As a result, the gardens have won national awards and were designated a "National Landmark for Landscape Architecture" by the American Society of Landscape Architects.
