Structural wall anchorage requirements in 2006 IBC and ASCE/SEI 7-05

November 2008 » Columns

Reorganization and reformatting of the seismic design provisions in the 2005 Edition of Minimum Design Loads for Building and Other Structures (ASCE/SEI 7-05) is a significant improvement compared with the 2002 edition of the standard. This is because the provisions are divided into Chapters 11 through 23 rather than having all the provisions in Chapter 9, which required more layers of subsections.

Because of the reorganization of the seismic design provisions into chapters, however, the requirements for anchorage of structural walls are in different chapters and sections of the standard, depending on the seismic design category of the building and what design procedure is used. There are also requirements for anchorage of structural walls in the International Building Code (IBC). This article summarizes the design load requirements for anchorage of structural walls in the 2006 IBC and ASCE/SEI 7-05. Table 1 summarizes the requirements for anchorage on structural walls.
