Steel joist catalog

Canam Steel Corporation is pleased to announce the printing of a new, updated U.S. Joist Catalog. It includes the newest Steel Joist Institute (SJI) specifications—the 42nd Edition—which features the ability to use joists with either an ASD or LRFD method of design. As before, the beginning of the catalog features Canam’s own information to supplement the SJI specification. These first 35 pages include photos, reference charts, and tips and discussion on the use of Canam steel joists. In addition, there are four new or improved features on the Canam website that coincide with the catalog.

Modular green roof system

According to GreenGrid Green Roof System, many people do not realize that its GreenGrid modular green roof system comes in three different sizes. The Ultra-Extensive holds 2-1/2 inches of media and drought-tolerant vegetation, is extremely lightweight, and is appropriate for buildings with limited structural capacity. The Extensive modules hold a 4-inch layer of growth/plant media and weigh only 15-18 pounds per square foot when wet. Finally, the 8-inch Intensive modules are perfect for elaborate garden roofs with larger plants and shrubs as well as pathways, terraces, and other architectural features.

Larger LSLs

For light commercial buildings subject to high lateral loads produced by earthquakes and high winds, building codes typically require the use of 3X studs at points in the wall where two pieces of sheathing meet (typically every third stud). In some areas of the United States, solid sawn 3x stud lumber is difficult to find, especially in long lengths for tall walls. Based on these challenges, and requests from architects and engineers for an easier solution, iLevel Trus Joist Commercial introduces TimberStrand laminated strand lumber (LSL) 3x nominal dimension studs. TimberStrand LSL 3X studs (2-1/2 inches actual width) are available in a variety of nominal dimensions, including 3x8, 3x10, 3x12, and 3x14.

Wood connectors

According to Simpson Strong-Tie, its new structural connectors for residential construction are faster and easier to install, and offer higher structural loads. The Simpson Strong-Tie THJU hip/jack hanger offers flexibility and ease of installation without sacrificing performance. The HDU14 is the company’s highest-capacity HDU holdown to date with more than 14,000 pounds of allowable load. Similar to the entire HDU series (which is now code listed), the pre-deflected geometry virtually eliminates deflection due to material stretch. H2A and H10A are new and improved hurricane ties for uplift conditions. The H2A is an improved version of the H2 hurricane tie with up to 575 pounds of uplift capacity. The H10A attaches to double top plates and provides up to 1,340 pounds of uplift capacity when attached to a Southern Pine truss. The geometry of the new SB anchor bolt is the latest development in high-capacity anchors. The smooth transition angle of the bolt places the head of the anchor in an optimum position in the concrete stem wall without creating excessive horizontal forces. This optimizes the performance of both the anchor and the footing, reducing the need for larger footings.

A brighter outlook

After years of ups and downs, cautious optimism greeted 2012. While economic progress lagged in 2011, this year started off with most in the consulting engineering industry adjusting and rising to the challenges of a volatile economy.
