New interactive tool on Canam Group website
A construction project search engine is now available to visitors who go to the Canam Group and business unit websites. This interactive tool, which is found on the left-hand side of the screen in the "Our Projects" section, allows visitors to perform a specific and rapid search through the 100 regularly updated project files that are currently online. Incidentally, it is now possible to view videos in 10 project files.

Visitors can perform two types of searches: an extended search (which covers all projects executed by all business units), or a limited search (which covers only the projects executed by a particular business unit).

Visitors can search by city, state/province, country, or market. All the information contained in the project files, including the summary, will be searched. Also, it is possible to fill out more than one field before launching a search.

Open Joist delivers exceptional performance and value
Installing floor trusses is heavy, sometimes dangerous, work for framers. With wooden I-Joists, determining sizes and locations of holes for mechanical services can be a difficult and often-ignored task. Open Joist, a revolutionary open-web, all-wood floor truss from Universal Forest Products, eliminates these hassles.
Open Joist takes advantage of the structural power of the triangle. Its open-web design reduces the dangers of drilling or cutting holes in the wrong place on a floor joist; something that can compromise the structural integrity of a floor system. Open Joist reduces and limits floor vibration more effectively than solid joists. The open-web design allows for fast, easy installation of mechanical systems such as plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems that can be installed within the floor frame instead of below.

Open Joist is lightweight, easy to handle, and installs much like dimensional lumber. Simple gussets allow for cantilevers and point loads and only 1-1/2 inches of bearing is required.

Open Joist is available from stock and comes in 9-1/4-inch, 11-7/8-inch, 14-inch, and 16-inch depths with trim-able ends to fit exact framing dimensions. One-foot incremental lengths and 11 inches of trim capacity allow for accurate, onsite adjustments while minimizing costs and jobsite waste.

A brighter outlook

After years of ups and downs, cautious optimism greeted 2012. While economic progress lagged in 2011, this year started off with most in the consulting engineering industry adjusting and rising to the challenges of a volatile economy.
