Concrete masonry inspection and testing manual
The International Code Council and the National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA) are publishing the third edition of Inspection and Testing of Concrete Masonry Construction. Updated to reference both the 2003 and 2006 editions of the International Building Code (IBC), the manual provides an in-depth look at masonry inspections with the use of photos, graphics, and checklists. It also includes new placement and testing information on self-consolidating grout, and provisions for continuous and periodic special inspections. In addition to referencing the IBC, Inspection and Testing of Concrete Masonry Construction references requirements in the 2005 Building Code for Masonry Structures (ACI 530/ASCE 5/TMS 402) and Specifications for Masonry Structures (ACI 530.1/ASCE 6/TMC 602).

Positive locking pins
According to Jergens, Inc., its Kwik-Lok Pins (KLPs) provide a clear advantage in a variety of construction applications, including cranes, scaffolding equipment, mining equipment, drilling equipment, lifting equipment, and in trailer beds. For any application requiring frequent connecting and disconnecting, lifting, changing, or securing objects without using tools, Jergens’ positive locking pins offer superior performance compared to detent, clevis, and cotter pins, says the company. In addition, Jergens KLPs are a high-quality, better-engineered positive locking pin and its unique manufacturing process ensures quick turnaround on special sizes and configurations. KLPs are manufactured in a wide range of standard and special sizes, including MS and NAS, with lot number traceability on every pin. Standard sizes of more than 6,000 items are available immediately from stock; and special handle, material, and ball configurations are also offered. KLPs are available in five handle styles: T, L, button, recessed button, and ring. Standard sizes range from 3/16-inch to 1-inch outside pin diameters in 1/2-inch to 6-inch grip lengths. All are made of stainless steel or carbon steel.

Photo measuring software adds 3-D capabilities
iPhotoMEASURE recently announced the release of iPhotoMEASURE Version 3.0, which adds several new features, including multiple depth capability for 3-D dimensioning, to the company’s advanced measurement software. According to the company, iPhotoMEASURE products are easy to use: The user takes a picture of the area, room, or object to be measured for remodeling, redecorating, or interior design purposes. The digital photo is then transferred to a computer and opened with iPhotoMEASURE software. With a click of the mouse, any distance within the picture can be accurately measured. This is most efficient for professions where size, distances, and measurements are prevalent. In addition to 3-D capabilities, Version 3.0 also offers additional benefits, including the ability to measure multiple planes and fields within a single photo, the capability to measure planes at an angle, circle and rectangular measurement, automatic field recognition, and improved print capabilities.

Multi-functional laser distance meter
The Leica DISTO D3 from Leica Geosystems is a multi-functional instrument that ensures simple, quick, and reliable measurements, according to the company. It can measure distances of up to 325 feet within 1/16 inch—in spite of nearby obstructions—and determine angles quickly and precisely. The cutting-edge Leica DISTO D3 is the smallest, most reliable laser distance meter in the world that fits into every pocket, says the company. It is prepared for all measuring situations: Aim the instrument straight at the target point, whether measuring out of corners, slots, or from edges. The instrument detects the multi-functional end piece automatically, which helps avoid expensive measuring errors. The instrument’s built-in tilt sensor quickly and simply determines tilts up to ± 45 degrees. The tilt sensor can also provide the user with true horizontal distances. Reliable measurements are therefore guaranteed in all situations. While measuring, a built-in sensor detects if the environment is dark and switches on the illumination of the keypad and display. In addition, the Leica DISTO D3 is equipped with multiple functions—it can calculate areas, volumes, room dimensions, and supports various types of Pythagorean functions. A time-delay release and enough memory for up to 20 measurements finish off the instruments wide range of functions.
