Mulkey Engineers & Consultants appoints Jill Wells Heath; Anne T. Sullivan, AIA, has joined Thornton Tomasetti, Inc.; Girls, Inc., honors Aine Brazil; Rafael Sabelli, S.E., joins Walter P Moore and relocates Joseph M. Ales Jr., Ph.D., P.E.; The Steel Deck Institute appoints Thomas Sputo, Ph.D., P.E., SECB
Anne T. Sullivan, AIA has joined Thornton Tomasetti, Inc., a structural engineering and design firm, as vice president in charge of establishing an historic preservation practice sector in the Chicago office. As a senior associate with Johnson Lasky Architects in Chicago over the past 15 years, Sullivan was involved with a number of Thornton Tomasetti projects, including Edgewater Beach Apartments exterior wall restoration in Chicago and the Martin Mitchell Mansion structural evaluation in Naperville, Ill.
Sullivan holds both a bachelor’s degree in art history and a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and master’s degree in historic preservation from Columbia University in New York with a concentration in building material conservation. She has been a registered architect in Illinois since 1993, and has been an instructor in the M.S. Historic Preservation Program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for more than 15 years where she teaches historic building technology. She is also vice president of the Association for Preservation Technology International, an international organization dedicated to promoting the best technologies for conserving historic structures and their settings.


Girls Inc., honored Aine Brazil at the annual Girls Inc., New York Celebration Luncheon at the New York Hilton on March 13. A powerful gathering of more than 1,000 business and community leaders committed to the Girls Inc., mission of inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold, the event recognizes women and men who, by their work and example, are creating a better future for girls. As one of 11 managing principals of Thornton Tomasetti, Inc., Brazil helps guide the international engineering firm of 650 employees in the design of high-rise office and residential buildings, hotels, hospitals, and other projects. After 30 years in the field, her accomplishments include leading the design of the following Times Square properties: 5 Times Square, Times Square Tower, and 745 Seventh Avenue. She is also responsible for the 975-foot-tall Comcast Tower in Philadelphia and the tallest building in New Jersey. Brazil holds a bachelor’s degree from the University College in Galway, Ireland, and a master’s degree in engineering from the Imperial College of Science and Technology in London. She was the first president of the Structural Engineers Association of New York, a past board member of Women Executives in Real Estate New York, and a member of the NYC Mayor’s Commission for the Adoption of a Model Code.


The Steel Deck Institute (SDI) board of directors is pleased to announce that Thomas Sputo, Ph.D., P.E., SECB has been appointed the new SDI technical director. In this capacity, Dr. Sputo will represent the SDI with various organizations such as AISI, ANSI, and ICC; supervise and monitor SDI research and test programs; work with the SDI Technical Committees; and assist with any SDI educational programs and other activities involving the engineering of steel decks. Dr. Sputo is a principal in the firm of Sputo and Lammert Engineering, LLC, Gainesville, Fla., with extensive experience in the design community. He is a registered professional engineer in eight states, along with certification as a special inspector in Florida. The SDI is also pleased to announce the appointment of Kimberly Lammert as the new SDI assistant technical director. Lammert is also a principal in the firm of Sputo and Lammert Engineering. She is a registered professional engineer and will assist Dr. Sputo in the coordination of specific activities involving SDI.


Jill Wells Heath has been appointed chief executive officer of Mulkey Engineers & Consultants, a civil engineering and consulting firm. Heath has been part of the firm since its inception and has served as its CPA, chief financial officer, and was appointed to the role of firm president in 2006. Heath will carry over her responsibilities as president into her role new role as CEO and president. As CEO, Heath is responsible for executing the firm’s long- and short-range goals. Those include building positive business alliances while expanding the firm’s business network, as well as championing the strategic efforts set forth by the Mulkey board of directors. Heath will continue to be very active in professional and community organizations. She currently serves on the board of the Raleigh City Museum; and is the 2008 president of Triangle Commercial Real Estate Women. She is a member of the American Council of Engineering Companies National Financial Forum, the Wachovia Board of Directors for Raleigh, N.C., the Wachovia Business Advisory Board, and the YMCA of Cary Advisory Board.


Walter P Moore has added top structural engineering talent in its Los Angeles office with expertise in secure and seismic engineering design services. Assuming the role of managing director is Joseph M. Ales Jr., Ph.D., P.E., a principal who relocated from its Tampa office. Ales was instrumental in helping Walter P Moore attain the status as a recognized leader in Building Information Modeling (BIM) and in establishing its secure design capabilities. Rafael Sabelli, S.E., has joined the firm as principal and director of seismic design. Sabelli is widely recognized as an industry leader in seismic issues in structural engineering and is co-winner of the prestigious 2008 "T.R. Higgins Lectureship Award" from the American Institute of Steel Construction for work on buckling-restrained braced frames, an emerging load-resisting system.
