The issue is bigger than us

I enjoyed Richard G. Weingardt, P.E.’s article "Educating tomorrow’s structural engineers: Who cares?" in the December issue of Structural Engineer. I’m a retired engineering contractor, but not an engineer, from Hawaii. Your group is not alone in this dilemma of lack of skills. It seems too many are looking at the short-term advantages and not the long term. There is a lack of interest in quality and performance. It is too easy to receive welfare benefits, which relieves the anxiety of where the next meal will come from. When people start worrying about that and become hungry the attitudes will change. We need to reorganize our social welfare system and force people to accept work that is beneath their "dignity."

Champion of the cause

I read regularly Richard G. Weingardt, P.E.’s columns in Structural Engineer, as well as many others he has written. I always enjoy what he has to say. As a fellow structural engineer, I could not agree with him more. I encourage him to keep writing these words and one of these days we will get the recognition that we so richly deserve. Thanks to Rich for being a champion of this cause.

Great job!

I just want to drop you a note regarding your great work: I think Structural Engineer produces very dynamic articles and I enjoy the fantastic NEW format!

A brighter outlook

After years of ups and downs, cautious optimism greeted 2012. While economic progress lagged in 2011, this year started off with most in the consulting engineering industry adjusting and rising to the challenges of a volatile economy.
