New focus for our annual guide

May 2008 » From the Editor

The 2008-2009 Structural Engineer Buyers’ Guide contains 2,014 product and service listings—all targeted for structural engineering professionals!

By Jennifer Goupil, P.E.

One hundred seventy-seven companies and organizations submitted information to the 2008-2009 Structural Engineer Buyers’ Guide. This second annual guide contains 2,014 product and service listings—all targeted for structural engineering professionals!

Similar to last year, this guide is organized into two parts: the categorical listing and the alphabetical listing. The categorical listing arranges product and service providers into groups specific to structural engineering interests such as building materials, geotechnical services and equipment, information technology, structural components, structural monitoring, and walls. Following these listings, the alphabetical listing provides contact information for all of the companies and associations contained within this guide. Advertisers in this issue of Structural Engineer are listed in orange and the advertiser index on page 50 provides you with the advertisement location and more.

Exciting new additions to this year’s guide are the "Focus On" resource pages. These one-page indexes contain a wealth of resources for you, including a list of past articles published in Structural Engineer, industry associations, and annual industry conferences. These handy guides are organized into four disciplines: concrete, steel, software, and codes.

Supporting this printed version of products and services, the contents of this guide will be available online in June. This robust, searchable resource will become your first stop when looking for products and services to support your practice.

Also coming in the June issue of Structural Engineer is the annual Compensation Survey. It will be delivered along with the traditional monthly editorial that you will not want to miss—including "Code Simple," "Legal Counsel Q&A," and "The View From Here" columns, and features on concrete building codes, steel moment frames, trends in bridge design, a wood joist case study, and our annual specifiers’ guide on bridge design software.

Finally, I want to tell you about our bi-weekly e-newsletter Structural Connection that was launched recently. This is an exciting electronic publication for structural engineers, firm owners and managers, and vendors of services and products vital to the structural engineering industry.

Developed by Structural Engineer’s award-winning editors, Structural Connection will keep you up-to-date on the latest projects, codes and standards, news, trends, technologies, and more. Click here to subscribe to this free e-newsletter.

Indeed, we are excited to bring you this 2008-2009 Structural Engineer Buyers’ Guide with our new "Focus On" resource pages! Please e-mail me with your feedback so that we can make next year’s guide even better.

A brighter outlook

After years of ups and downs, cautious optimism greeted 2012. While economic progress lagged in 2011, this year started off with most in the consulting engineering industry adjusting and rising to the challenges of a volatile economy.
