New coating enables energy efficiency, green building guide

By Structural Engineer Staff

New coating enables energy efficiency

Arkema Inc., a producer of vinyl products and industrial chemicals, continues to advance the construction coatings industry with Kynar Aquatec. An innovative technology based on acrylic-modified Kynar PVDF resin in a convenient emulsion form, Kynar Aquatec delivers the durability and performance of traditional Kynar PVDF coatings with the ability to dry at ambient temperatures.

A VOC-compliant and versatile system that is both field- and factory-applied, Kynar Aquatec-based coatings can be employed over a variety of substrates, including metals, PVC, textiles, and elastomers. Kynar Aquatec-based coatings are particularly beneficial for roof coatings, as it provides high reflectivity and emissivity values that meet the needs of energy-efficient building codes such as California’s Title 24 mandate.

Kynar Aquatec-based coatings can help turn any roof into a cool roof that helps cut a building’s energy and maintenance costs, improves occupant comfort, and extends the roof’s service life. Roof coatings based on Kynar Aquatec emulsions pick up very little dirt, which allows them to stay whiter longer, and further increases a building’s overall efficiency.

Other benefits of Arkema’s Kynar Aquatec technology include its ability to withstand extended exposure to severe weather conditions, its superb mildew resistance, outstanding water repellency, and exceptional stain resistance. Coatings based on Kynar Aquatec also exhibit excellent adhesion to Kynar 500 resin-based coatings and other metal coatings, enabling in-the-field metal touchups, repairs, and color changes.

Green building guide

Grace Construction Products, a worldwide leader in products for the construction industry, introduces Building Green with Grace, a new guide that helps architects and specifiers select products that achieve the prerequisites and points needed to meet the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System. Introduced at the AIA 2007 National Convention and Design Exposition, the new brochure reflected the expo’s theme of "Growing Beyond Green."

Developed and administered by the United States Green Building Council, the LEED Green Building Rating System is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high-performance green buildings. LEED gives building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings’ performance.

The LEED system is designed to promote sustainable sites, energy/water efficiency, recycled materials, indoor environmental quality, and innovation in design. In each category, there are prerequisites and criteria for which a project can earn points. Building Green with Grace identifies how Grace Products can help a project meet the prerequisites and earn points in the LEED-NC (New Construction) Version 2.2 Rating System.

Products included in Building Green with Grace include the company’s Perm-A-Barrier Air Barriers, Preprufe Waterproofing, Florprufe Vapor Barriers, Bituthene Waterproofing Membranes, Procor Fluid Applied Waterproofing Membranes, Hydroduct Drainage Composites, Monokote Fireproofing Products, FlameSafe Firestopping Products, roofing underlayments, and concrete admixtures.
