Concrete resources

The American Concrete Institute (ACI) announces the availability of several new publications and CD-ROMs to educate and inform industry professionals on the newest concrete-related information and technology. The publications include 440R-07: Report on Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Reinforcement for Concrete Structures; 548.8-07: Specification for Type EM (Epoxy Multi-Layer) Polymer Overlay for Bridge and Parking Garage Decks; and IPS-2: Seismic Rehabilitation of Concrete Structures. The CD-ROMs are a collection of papers prepared for a session held at the ACI Fall 2007 Convention in Puerto Rico, including SP-246CD: Structural Implications of Shrinkage and Creep of Concrete; SP-247CD: Self-Consolidating Concrete for Precast Prestressed Applications; and SP-248CD: Deflection and Stiffness Issues in FRC and Thin Structural Elements.

Structural design software

Bentley Systems, Inc.’s Research Engineers Solutions Center released STAAD.Pro 2007—Bentley’s comprehensive structural analysis program for static, dynamic, or pushover analysis of bridges, containment structures, embedded structures (tunnels and culverts), pipe racks, steel, concrete, aluminum or timber buildings, transmission towers, stadiums, and other structures. The STAAD.Pro 2007 interoperable design software supports more than 70 international design codes. It addresses recent changes in European, U.S., and Southeast Asian design codes, and is well suited for a variety of vertical applications, including plant, civil, and building.

"Green" rapid concrete repair product

CERATECH, Inc., a next-generation, "green" construction materials technology company introduced D.O.T.Line, an environmentally friendly, high-performance, rapid concrete repair product. As the newest offering in CERATECH’S portfolio of rapid concrete repair products, D.O.T.Line joins a stable of versatile, non-portland, non-epoxy construction repair materials. D.O.T.Line comes in turn-key, pre-extended, 58-pound bags and is mixed and placed like traditional concrete. D.O.T.Line was developed by combining non-hazardous, sustainable waste stream materials into a cementitious mineral structure. This new material technology provides a cost-effective, rapid repair concrete that’s comprised of more than 90-percent recycled materials.

Retaining wall design book and software

A new expanded 7th edition of the popular Basics of Retaining Wall Design is now available from the publishers of Retain Pro Software. Written by Hugh Brooks, P.E., S.E., this concisely written design guide covers nearly every type of retaining wall: cantilevered, restrained, tie-back, gravity, segmental both gravity and with geogrids, water retention, counterfort, tilt-up, sheet pile, curved swimming pool walls, and others. It also covers the design of pier and pile foundations, plus 11 varied design examples with step-by-step procedures. Current building code requirements are provided, and tips are offered for economical designs, errors to avoid, and cost-effective solutions if problems occur.

Liquid waterproofing membrane

MEL-ROL LM (ALL SEASON) from W.R. Meadows is a single component, polymer-modified, cold-applied, liquid waterproofing membrane ideal for below-grade vertical applications. According to the company, with MEL-ROL LM, installation time is reduced, utilizing either a spray or roller application. This all-season formulation provides the same superior waterproofing protection as the standard MEL-ROL LM product, yet this version has been formulated for use in cold climates. The product can be used on new and remedial waterproofing applications on concrete or masonry block substrates and it features very low vapor permeability. Its superior elongation bridges minor cracks; it will not become brittle with age. The product is fully bonded—water will not run beneath the membrane.
