What clients want: Get powerful results from client perception studies — When conducting strategic business planning with an AEC firm, I always ask, “What makes your firm different than your competitors? Why would a client work with you instead of another, similar firm?” Often, firm leaders say that their technical expertise or experience in a certain market makes them stand out. Commonly, clients respond that, on a technical level, many AEC firms are about the same. One way to bridge this gap and gain total clarity on what your clients value the most — and more importantly, to make sure your firm is delivering on that — is to implement a client perception study.

Researching the future: Today’s inquiries are developing tomorrow’s mainstream civil engineering tools — To discover some of the technologies that may become mainstream tools for civil engineers within a few years, CE News invited researchers from selected organizations to complete a brief online survey about their work. This exclusive article provides a glimpse of the broad range of solutions being investigated for transportation infrastructure, stormwater management, water quality, environmental protection, and other pressing problems.

Happy 100th, Manhattan Bridge — On Dec. 31, 2009, the Manhattan Bridge becomes a centenarian, and the bridge is stronger than ever. For most people, the bridge is merely a means to an end, be it Brooklyn or Manhattan. For some, it’s a symbol of New York City’s greatness. For Dave Frieder, it’s a second home — he has climbed and photographed it 13 times.

Brücken culture-gap — Columnist Dan McNichol relays a recent trip he took to Germany and was both inspired and saddened by his observations of infrastructure. Recounting a conversation with a German, McNicol’s shared the following:

He moved on to a story of traveling to one of his favorite cities: “I love Chicago, but there is such a contrast between its world-class skyscrapers and that old train on elevated tracks — what do you call it?” I answered, “The El.” He laughed, “Yes, that piece of history! I couldn’t believe how long it took to get from the airport to the city. I mean it was considerable.” He continued, getting stimulated by the depth to which our infrastructure has sunk. “And, what about those telegraph wires hanging from, what do you call them, those wooden masts?” Telephone polls, I admitted. I nearly wept.

Behind the glitzy debut of MGM-CityCenter, LEED-Gold — At 67 acres, 18-million square feet under roof, and at more than $8.5 billion in construction costs, MGM CityCenter is the largest privately financed real estate development project in U.S. history — and also one of the greenest of its scale. Though it may be lost on opening-day gamers and revelers, many buildings in the project are certified LEED-Gold by the U.S. Green Building Council.
