Degenkolb Engineers James O. Malley and David Bonneville awarded two top honors

SAN FRANCISCO — Degenkolb Engineers received word during the same week that the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) announced that Jim Malley received the 2010 AISC T.R. Higgins Lectureship Award and that the National Council of Structural Engineering Associations (NCSEA) named David Bonneville the 2009 Robert Cornforth Award recipient.

While both men celebrated their accolades in the same month, the two awards honored very different, nuanced work in the field of structural engineering.

“The work done at Degenkolb Engineers benefits greatly from the academic contributions and hands-on leadership of these two men,” said Chris Poland, Chairman and CEO of Degenkolb. “In their roles as senior principals, Jim and David have demonstrated unrivaled acumen in the field and provided invaluable guidance for our junior engineers. No two men are more deserving of praise.”

Malley will be recognized at the 2010 Steel Conference for his paper “The 2005 AISC Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings,” published in the First Quarter 2007 AISC Engineering Journal. Malley’s contributions to steel-related seismic research and particularly his work on this paper qualify him, under AISC guidelines, as an outstanding lecturer and author whose technical papers are considered an outstanding contribution to the engineering literature on fabricated structural steel.

Malley has more than 26 years of experience in structural design, seismic evaluation and seismic strengthening of existing buildings choosing to focus primarily on the behavior of steel structures. Most recently, Malley headed a project team that performed Modal Pushover Analysis (a form of analysis developed by Degenkolb) and a retrofit design of California’s Department of Transportation District 4 headquarters, a monumental 15-story steel moment frame structure.

Currently, Malley is a member of the AISC Committee on Specifications and heads the subcommittee responsible for seismic provisions. He is also a member of the NCSEA Board of Directors and will become President in 2010. Previously, he served as a member of the Structural Engineers Association of California and Northern California (SEAOC and SEAONC) Board of Directors.

Bonneville’s achievement honors his exceptional dedication and exemplary service to the National Council of Structural Engineering Associations and to the structural engineering profession as a whole. Bonneville once served as Chair of the Code Advisory Committee for the organization.

Bonneville has more than 30 years of experience in structural analysis and design involving new and existing buildings. His primary areas of specialization include the science and technology and government sectors. Bonneville has been an active contributor to the seismic code development process in California and nationally. He provides council on an ongoing basis for a number of technology companies at the heart of Silicon Valley, developing and implementing seismic hazard reduction programs.

Bonneville sits as the Board Chair of the Building Seismic Safety Council and acts as a member of the ASCE 7 Seismic Task Committee and the Seismic Code Development Committee. He is also Chair of the Structural Design/Lateral Forces Advisory Committee for the California Building Standards Commission. He is past chair of the SEAOC Seismology Committee, past chair of the NCSEA Code Advisory Committee and past president of SEAONC.
