The Steel Structures Technology Center has announced their Spring 2010 schedule for seminars on the inspection of steel building construction and structural welding using International Building Code (IBC), American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), American Welding Society (AWS), and Research Council on Structural Connections (RCSC) codes and standards. All three seminars are conducted in cooperation with the International Code Council (ICC).
The "Structural Steel and Bolting Inspection" seminar provides eight hours of discussion on the inspection of steel-framed buildings using the AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings, the AISC Code of Standard Practice, and the International Building Code (IBC), and on the inspection of high-strength bolted joints under the RCSC Specification for Structural Joints Using ASTM A325 or A490 Bolts.
The "Structural Welding Inspection" seminar provides eight hours of discussion on welding inspection using the IBC and the AWS Structural Welding Codes D1.1 - Steel, D1.3 - Sheet Steel, and D1.4 - Reinforcing Steel.
The "Plan Reading for Steel Construction" 2.5-hour evening seminar discusses the use and understanding of typical structural steel design drawings and project specifications for steel-framed buildings.
Seminars are scheduled in the following cities
| Chicago / Elk Grove Village, IL |
March 31 & April 1, 2010 |
| Sacramento / Natomas, CA |
April 6 & 7, 2010 |
| Secaucus / Meadowlands, NJ |
April 14 & 15, 2010 |
| Los Angeles / Buena Park, CA |
April 21 & 22, 2010 |
| Las Vegas, NV |
April 28 & 29, 2010 |
| Atlanta / Dunwoody, GA |
May 5 & 6, 2010 |
The seminars parallel the ICC special inspector certification programs for "S1 Structural Steel and Bolting Inspection" and for "S2 Structural Welding Inspection". All seminars are approved for continuing education credit for ICC certifications. In addition, the courses meet the criteria of AWS QC1:2007 regarding continuing education credit for AWS Certified Welding Inspector certification renewal, and meet the requirements for professional engineer PDHs in most jurisdictions.
Individuals may to register for each seminar separately, or register for two or more seminars as a discounted package. Group discounts are offered for those firms or agencies sending three or more attendees.

The seminars will be instructed by Robert Shaw, a consulting engineer with 35 years experience in steel construction and a specialist in steel construction inspection and quality standards. He is intimately involved in steel construction standards, serving as a member of the AWS D1 Structural Welding Committee and Subcommittee D1L on Seismic Welding, the AISC Committee on Specifications, AISC Task Committee 9 on Seismic Design and Task Committee 13 on Quality Control and Quality Assurance, and the RCSC Specifications Committee. He also chairs Commission XV on Design, Analysis and Fabrication of Welded Structures of the International Institute of Welding. As President of the SSTC, he has conducted seminars on structural steel inspection since 1990. He is also author of the Structural Bolting Handbook, the Structural Welding Quality Handbook, the Shop Inspection Handbook for Structural Steel Buildings, and the Structural Steel Inspector's Workbook.
