McCarthy Building Companies to begin major structural work on Torrance Memorial Medical Center Replacement Tower
TORRANCE, Calif. – McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., one of the premier hospital building contractors in the U.S., is constructing the $300 million Torrance Memorial Medical Center Replacement Tower on the existing medical center site at 3330 Lomita Boulevard. Excavation and shoring for the new construction is nearly complete as the tower’s structural steel is scheduled to begin in October 2011.

Bridge monitoring equipment provides real time data after earthquake
PHILADELPHIA, Penn. – Within minutes after this week’s 5.8 magnitude earthquake, the Burlington County Bridge Commission was able to assess the impact on its landmark bridges crossing from New Jersey to Pennsylvania, determining that the earthquake did not impact the safety or functionality of the bridges. Thanks to smart technology sensing and data collection equipment installed on the two Commission-owned bridges and monitored by the Commission Engineer of Record Pennoni Associates, engineers reviewing data from the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge and the Burlington-Bristol Bridge from remote locations were able to determine almost immediately that these bridges remained unaffected.

Design-build project delivery used for more than 40 percent of non-residential construction projects, report shows
Washington, D.C. – A new study analyzing the design-build project delivery method in the United States shows it was used on average in more than 40 percent of non-residential construction projects in 2010, a ten percent increase since 2005. The study was commissioned by the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) and was completed by RSMeans Reed Construction Data Market Intelligence. Design-build is an integrated approach that delivers design and construction services under one contract with a single point of responsibility.

CONTECH and StormTrap announce agreement
WEST CHESTER, Ohio – Contech Construction Products Inc. and StormTrap, LLC have announced that they have entered into a strategic agreement. The agreement grants Contech the exclusive right to sell StormTrap's innovative concrete modular stormwater management systems in all states west of the Mississippi, excluding Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri and Alaska, but including Louisiana and Hawaii. In addition, this agreement grants StormTrap access to Contech's extensive line of water quality products.

Deltek predicts $9.5 Billion in federal architecture and engineering spending by 2016
HERNDON, Va. – Deltek, the leading global provider of enterprise software and information solutions for professional services firms and government contractors, has released a new research report that predicts demand for architecture and engineering (A/E) services by the U.S. government will increase to $9.5 billion in 2016 from $8.1 billion in 2011, at a compounded annual growth rate of 3.2%.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO) has selected Alexander McCaskill as the sole recipient of its 2011-2012 Senior Undergraduate Scholarship. This is the twentieth year of the ASDSO Scholarship Program, which awards up to $10,000 to US citizens enrolled in accredited programs in engineering or related fields and planning careers related to the design, construction, or operation of dams.

First panels in place on the new façade of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam: The largest composite building in the world
AMSTERDAM – The new face of the Stedelijk Museum is becoming more noticeable by the day. A large part of the panels are already in place on what will eventually become known as “The Bathtub". After coating, the white and seemingly floating construction, with its sleek finish and without any seams or details, will be the counterpart of the adjacent historic brick building from 1895. The Japanese fiber manufacturer Teijin produced and donated the Twaron (aramid fiber) and Tenax (carbon fiber) for the composite used to create the façade. This, along with a substantial financial contribution, makes Teijin one of the Main Founders of the new Stedelijk Museum.

SOM Foundation awards winner of the 2011 SOM Structural Engineering Travel Fellowship
CHICAGO – The Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) Foundation recently announced that the $10,000 SOM 2011 Structural Engineering Travel Fellowship has been awarded to Ashley Thrall, who in May received her PhD from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Princeton University, where she has also received a Masters in Arts in 2009 and a Master of Science in Engineering in 2008. Working with Professors Sigrid Adriaenssens, Maria Garlock, and David Billington, her PhD research has focused on improving the sustainability of movable bridges by generating new forms that integrate the structural and mechanical systems.
