PCI issues call for entries for 2011 Architectural Student Design Awards
CHICAGO — The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) has issued a call for entries for its 2011 Student Architectural Design Competition. Earthquake engineering student to defend dissertation this summer
BUFFALO, N.Y. — Like most doctoral candidates, University at Buffalo (UB) student and Haitian native Pierre Fouché is a study in focus and determination and, if anything, the Jan. 12, 2010, earthquake that struck his home country only intensified these traits. As originally planned, Fouché, who came to UB for his master's degree in 2006 on a Fulbright scholarship, will defend his dissertation this summer; it describes a new technique he helped develop that can better protect bridges from damage caused by earthquakes and explosions, either malevolent or accidental.

Research seeks design guidelines for composite bridges
BRISTOL, U.K. — Extensive use of advanced composite materials — glass and /or carbon fibre reinforced polymers — could be the answer to building bridges in half the time, thereby dramatically reducing costs and traffic flow disruption during construction without altering the structural reliability of the completed bridges. New research led by Wendel Sebastian, senior lecturer in structural engineering in the Department of Civil Engineering at Bristol University, is looking at the use of advanced composite decks for traffic bridges.
