Bentley announces winners of 2010 Be Inspired Awards

Civil engineers to study impact of New Zealand earthquake
RESTON, VA. — On Sept. 3, 2010, a magnitude-7 earthquake occurred on the eastern side of New Zealand, approximately 40 kilometers west of Christchurch, causing significant damage. In an effort to learn from the performance of the region's various infrastructure systems, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) will be sending two technical assessment teams to New Zealand to study the impact of the quake.

Research institutions receive funding
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has awarded a total of $50 million in grants to five institutions to support the construction of new scientific research facilities that will explore everything from nanometer-scale electronics and “green” buildings to microbe ecosystems in the oceans. The five projects receiving funding under the NIST Construction Grant Program (NCGP) will contribute to almost $133 million in new laboratory construction projects, according to grantees.

Young design team is finalist in national competition
NEW YORK, N.Y. — Five years after Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans, a team of young engineers and architects designed RAMPed UP, a prototype for a small, green, and affordable house for an elderly couple in the Broadmoor neighborhood, one of the most damaged areas of the city. With a construction cost of only $100,000, the shotgun-style residence is inexpensive to build and operate. Construction on the house begins this fall.
